Essay Contest

The Nyquist foundation hosts a Community Student Essay Contest administered by the Culbertson and Froid Public Libraries. If you are a current high school student at Culbertson or Froid High School, you can submit your essay for consideration.

THIS YEAR’S ESSAY PROMPT: “Students, parents and teachers often complain that some courses taught in high school are unnecessary, while other topics important for students' futures are woefully missing.  If you could design a new course to be taught at your school, what would it be, and how or why would it be beneficial to students' future?”

GUIDELINES:  A well-written personal essay, researched essay or opinion piece.  May include research from published sources or interviews, both of which must be footnoted.  500-1000 words typed double-spaced with an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.  Please put essay title in the center top; name, date and town in the right top.  May get help from your local library.

DEADLINE: Nov. 30th, 2024

ELIGIBILITY:  Students in Culbertson and Froid grades 8-12.

AWARDS:  One first prize of $250 and one second prize of $150 for each town.

Scholarships

The Nyquist Foundation yearly issues two Robert and Ruth Nyquist scholarships to graduating seniors at the Bainville Public High School.

The purpose of this scholarship program is to help further the education of Bainville High School graduating seniors at the trade, technical, specialized, and professional levels in areas relevant to the life and economy of rural America.  Up to two scholarships totaling $1000 are awarded each year – the number and size dependent upon the number of applications received, their quality, and their relevance to foundation interests.

Note that these scholarships are for the purpose of training students for fields relevant to rural America. We hope that graduating Bainville seniors will choose to return and contribute to their community after training. As such, it is not always the student with the best grades or most difficult coursework who receives the scholarship, but rather the student planning to pursue a field of study such as agriculture or technical, and who has already shown an interest or aptitude in such fields through their curricular or extracurricular activities.

Bainville High School seniors can apply for this scholarship at the link below, or by requesting a paper copy of the application from Bainville High School.
